My hometown of Hiroshima had a remarkably late rainy season. This odd shift in the expected weather drew my attention and turned my thoughts towards my childhood home where my mother grows and tends a garden filled with beautiful flowers – including the hydrangea. In Japanese culture, the beautiful Hydrangea flowers symbolize the rainy season and this hydrangea, in particular, was arranged by my mother. At her age, there are many things that have become physically challenging for her, but she continues to enjoy arranging the flowers that she nurtures in her garden and uses them to decorate her home. I used a traditional Japanese art-style for this composition to better complement the age of my parent’s home, a link to both my childhood and to my culture.
