In the center of Bali, there’s a beautiful landscape of rice fields and a village called Ubud that awakens a fierce sense of nostalgia for my childhood. This picturesque village and watery fields make me think of the Japanese countryside of my youth. One day, a squall had passed through leaving wisps of clouds in its wake and broken flashes of sunlight and clear sky. The rice paddies were like mirrors carved into the earth, reflecting the beautiful sky and changing light – it was a sight too beautiful for me to ever forget. I painted this hoping to capture something of the beauty that lived on in my heart and memory.
