I wanted to capture the journey and unique emotions of a young woman as she leaves behind her childhood days to walk into the future of discovering her adult self. This kind of journey is always fraught, and the female experience, in particular, is often rife with anxiety and uncertainties. Not only does she have to find and forge herself as an adult, but she has to do so in the face of a world that will be all too quick to define who she is based on her gender alone. The contrast of a brightening sky is undercut with shadows, just as hopes for the future can be undercut by frustrations and disappointments. A leaning power pole represents her anxiety but the surging waters that are the exuberance and possibility of her youth, counter that anxious tension. Her canine companion keeps her journey from being one of solitude, at her side and leading her into the future.
