I perceive the rupture between nature and humankind as a mirror of the delicate and often conflicted connection between society and the individual. In this story, a bear cub, journeying with its mother in search of food, strays into a human town. When its mother is ultimately captured, the cub—left alone and frightened—becomes violent. In its disturbed state, madness unfurls like mist beneath the stars, conjuring a forest of illusions in the night sky to show the cub’s yearning to return to a place of safety and peace, yearning to return to nature. One by one, the manmade structures are engulfed by trees, as if nature has given an answer and stirred forth to console the cub and restore what man had claimed.
