I use photographs and my imagination for inspiration when drawing unfamiliar locations and unvisited destinations. There is an underground flood management system sprawling beneath the suburbs of Tokyo. Sometimes called the Underground Shrine, the Metropolitan Area Outer Underwater Discharge Channel has massive 18 meter tall support pillars and a cavernous air reminiscent of an underground cathedral or fortress. It reminded me of imagery from O. Henry’s short story, “Transients of Arcadia,” in which the graceful, high-society guests at a hotel, one hidden safely away from both the heat of summer and the noise of the masses, are likened to trout resting in the sanctuary of pellucid, hidden pools.
