I visited the Benesse Art Site Naoshima in 2015. This amazing island on the Inland Sea holds many impressive installments and buildings, including a museum designed by the famous architect Todao Ando. He sought to protect the natural beauty of this island landscape moreso than leave a mark upon it, so much of the building is subterranean in design. I was particularly inspired by the entrance staircase, which seemed to me like a square spiral sinking deep into the earth, offering a path to new, hidden views. In my composition I focused on that spiral, but reimagined is as a rose with each petal offering a view onto a different scene in differing perspectives.
