JOSSET Thibaud, editor-in-chief of “Univers des Arts,” one of the three major art magazines in France, gave the following brief review.
What immediately captivates us about Sumiko Sakamoto’s world is its full, eye-catching color, and the fact that color is there as color. Her talent for composition also makes her works and landscapes luscious. The landscapes are conceived not as classical outdoor scenes, but as genre paintings based on elements clearly chosen by the artist, and the scenes that unfold in these landscapes, even in her most contemplative works, always have some sense of narrative.
It is fragments of small dreams that she presents through night scenes animated by the unreal light and fresh, calm atmosphere that she is interested in. These are not only fragments rich in metaphors drawn from her own imagination, but also present the viewer with an “ideal dream. In other words, she opens the door not only to her own dream world, but also to the world of everyone’s aspirations and fantasies. She reminds us directly that we can reach the world of our dreams by opening sometimes ordinary doors. That is the strength of the artist.”
