When I first painted a composition of the same name and butterfly motif, I was deeply moved by the imagery of ruins, their walls marked with ornamental reliefs that were slowly crumbling under time’s touch. A statue of a Buddhist temple goddess stands quietly in the moonlight, her quiet gaze turned to the miracle of soaring butterflies, the vessels for the souls of her predecessors. This became my focus in the smaller piece. In this piece the luminous flare rising from the bright surface of the water can also appear as a waterfall catching the reflection of the full moon, so even if the canvas is smaller, the composition can be interpreted from many different perspectives.
